Ancient Mother

This song is a weaving together of several chants, invocations, and ceremonial prayers that have been sung in sacred gatherings for decades. Some of these traditions come from known sources, while others have traveled through communities over time and their original origins are unknown.

The verse “Light Is Returning” was written by the late Charlie Murphy and is included here in honor of his memory and spirit. The “Great Mystery” verse is adapted from a traditional Lakota prayer. An invocation to Wakan Tanka, the Great Mystery. Translated into English.
